Arrives from Shakhtar
Now it is a done deal: Benfica have announced the David Neres signing. The 25-year-old winger arrives from Shakhtar Donetsk and has signed a contract until 2027. According to the club announcement, the Brazilian national team player will cost €15.3 million, making him the tenth most expensive signing in club history. Neres will have a €100 million exit clause.
Neres joined Shakhtar from Ajax for €12 million in January, but the Brazilian never played for the club due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the consequential interruption of league play. Italian transfer specialist Gianluca di Marzio recently reported that Neres’ contract had a clause that would allow him to leave for a relatively low fee because of the war.
Haaland, Coutinho & Co. – The most expensive summer transfer in 2022
Benfica will become Neres’ fourth club in his fourth different country. The winger is the first major signing of new head coach Roger Schmidt. The club has previously signed Alexander Bah (Slavia Prague), Petar Musa (Boavista), and Mihailo Ristic (Montpellier). Neres will become the 113th Brazilian in Benfica’s club history—no other country has had more players at the club.
Neres 2nd most expensive signing in Ajax’s club history
Neres became the second most expensive signing in Ajax’s history when he joined the club from São Paulo in 2017 for €17,4 million (including the €2.4 million in the sell-on clause from the Shakhtar transfer). Only Sébastien Haller (for €22.5m from West Ham in 2020) was more expensive. Neres was involved in 88 goals in 179 games across all competitions and won three Eredivisie titles and two Dutch Cups.
