Tottenham sign Yves Bissouma – Spurs enjoy summer head start over Arsenal and Man Utd

Tottenham Hotspur may have clinched a final-day top four spot in the conclusion to this season’s Premier League campaign, but Antonio Conte & Co. certainly aren’t resting on their laurels ahead of an equally important summer transfer window. And, once again, it seems as though they have stolen a lead on their closest rivals. Indeed, Spurs have confirmed their third signing of the summer transfer window after agreeing a fee in the region of £25 million for Brighton midfielder Yves Bissouma, who now joins the club following the arrival of Ivan Perisic from Inter Milan and Fraser Forster from Southampton on free transfers.

However, it seems as though Conte and his backroom staff are only getting started with their summer spending spree. According to the Times, Tottenham want to bring in four more players after Bissouma, which may include Everton striker Richarlison, Middlesbrough youngster Djed Spence, Dynamo Kiev central defender Ilya Zabarnyi and former Spurs playmaker Christian Eriksen.

Still chasing their tails – Arsenal and Man Utd make slow summer start

What makes this dynamic push for new players even more impressive is that when we compare Tottenham’s strategy with that of their main rivals for fourth place next season – Arsenal and Manchester United – it showcases a club that are being pragmatic and definitive in bagging their transfer targets, while their rivals continue to struggle to tie big deals down. 

Indeed, so far in this current transfer window Mikel Arteta and his backroom staff have only managed to tie down two minor deals in goalkeeper Matt Turner and right winger Marquinhos, while the club’s search for a new No.9 to replace Alexandre Lacazette is only just getting started. The North London club have been linked with moves for Manchester City forward Gabriel Jesus and Raphinha from Leeds United, but so far there hasn’t been any real progress made on either front. Which is certainly worrying for a team that currently has no strikers in their first team roster. 

To no great surprise, Man Utd have also been just as slow in their attempts to add new additions to a lacklustre squad which has lost no less than five first team players to expiring contracts. New manager Erik Ten Hag knows that he needs full-backs, central midfielders and probably more firepower in attack, but to date rumours about Jurrien Timber, Frenkie de Jong and Christopher Nkunku remain little more than that. The Old Trafford club have yet to sign a single player this summer and, like Arsenal, are already falling well behind Spurs before a ball has even been kicked.
