Alphonso Davies shines in attacking role for Canada – “Can play there for Bayern too”

Impressed in attacking role

Alphonso Davies impressed on Thursday night in Canada’s 4-0 victory over Curaçao in the Concacaf Nations League. In his first match at BC Place since being transferred from the Vancouver Whitecaps to Bayern Munich for $11 million in 2019—in what is still a club-record fee for the ‘Caps—Davies scored a brace and was the man of the match. What stood out in the match was that Davies was not playing as a left-back but rather as a flexible forward.

“[Davies] is a once in a generation player,” Canada head coach John Herdman said after the game when asked about Davies’ attacking role. “He’s a special player… I think Alphonso can play as a 10, he can play as a 7, an 11, a wingback. He’s just got that ability, he has speed and he has power and is very intelligent, a guy that is very committed to his craft.”

“For me, every time I put on the jersey for my country … I’ll play wherever the coach wants to play me,” Davies said when asked about the difference between playing for Bayern and Canada. “I’m happy and willing to play that position, whether it’s up the field or behind. Obviously, there’s different players that I’m playing with, but it’s all the same football.”

Herdman on Davies: “I think Davies could play up front for Bayern”

Herdman would also like to see Davies in a more advanced role for Bayern Munich. “I think he can play in the front three for Bayern,” Herdman said. “I think a lot of people would like to see that shift. He was already playing a much higher position at the start of the year and I would love to see them play a front three with him. At least, he got that ability.”

Bayern Munich are, of course, heavily pursuing Liverpool’s Sadio Mané, who can also play several roles in a front three. But in Serge Gnabry Bayern might be losing an attacking player. Davies certainly has the ability, the speed, and the creativity to play further up the pitch, he has highlighted this not just for the national team but also when he played for the Vancouver Whitecaps in Major League Soccer.
