Transfermarkt can now confirm new market values for every player in Serie A, with the race for Italy’s most valuable squad now closer than the dramatic title race which engulfed the Italian top flight this season. Fortunately for AC Milan, the market value race came to the same conclusion as the league campaign, with the Italian champions now back in first place in the market value ranking, even though no less than 10 players at the club have seen their values drop. Besides Milan, the biggest winners were Roma and Udinese.
There is a new career high for Milan forward Rafael Leão, who climbs from €50 million to €70 million. Jatin Dietl, Area Manager for Italy, said: “Leao is the player of the Scudetto. Not long ago, it seemed like his head wasn’t 100 percent focused on football and more interested in his future rap career – until it clicked. This season he kept getting better and more consistent, so much so that at the crucial part of the season he could practically decide games almost single-handedly.”
As a result, the Portuguese winger, who joined from Lille in 2019 for €29.5m, is now among the ten most valuable footballers in Serie A, while Juventus forward Dušan Vlahović maintains the top position. Another import from France, Pierre Kalulu, joined Milan in 2020 when Lyon received €1.2m for the homegrown talent, and has since seen his value increase from €17m to €28m and is now among the ten most valuable central defenders in the league.
Including Abraham & Tomori – The most valuable Serie A players
“Regardless of whether as a central defender or full back, Kalulu has blossomed into a top performer this season and is symbolic of the development of the team. At the age of 21, he is already as tough on the ball as players over 30 and thanks to him Milan were able to cope with the absences of Davide Calabria and Simon Kjaer without any problems,” said Dietl. Despite 13 devaluations, the Rossoneri increased their squad value by €42m to €522m, overtaking Inter Milan (who dropped €14m to €515m) and Juventus (who dropped €35m to €521m). This is in relation to the last time the squad values were available in 2012.
Serie A market values: Gosens & de Vrij down – Zalewski among winners
In 2012, Robin Gosens was still playing in the U-19 team at VfL Rhede. But now he represents the biggest devaluation of every Inter player, with the German international losing value after four years of increases. The Nerazzuri signed the left wing-back on loan plus an obligation to buy him for €15m. “Gosens came as a future replacement for Ivan Perisic in the winter. Thanks to his outstanding season finale, Gosens has hardly picked up any playing time so far and if the Croatian had extended his contract instead of joining Tottenham, this could have continued – now Gosens should have a regular spot in the team for 2022/23. Nevertheless, we had to correct his market value, on the one hand because of the relatively low transfer fee and on the other hand because he had an unusually small amount of gametime this season after his compulsory break,” Dietl explained the downgrade from €35m to €28m – exactly the same amount by which teammate Stefan de Vrij drops following a mixed season and turning 30 earlier this year.
In contrast, Nicola Zalewski, a Roma talent who did end up playing a huge amount of football under José Mourinho this season, was promoted from the U-19s to the first team at the start of the season and has regularly been relied upon as the club’s left winger since the end of February. “Zalewski was thrown in at the deep end by Mourinho because the return of long-term absentee Leonardo Spinazzola was delayed and new signing Matías Viña was a complete disappointment. Zalewski has not only established himself in the starting eleven, but was also one of the top performers when they won the UEFA Conference League – Roma’s first title in over ten years,” said Dietl about the Poland international’s major upgrade from €2.5m to €12m.
Away from the teams fighting in European competitions, Udinese right-back Nahuel Molina has secured the biggest rise, doubling his market value from €10m to €20m. “After a strong first Serie A season in 2020/21, Molina’s expectations were extremely high,” said Dietl. “But with the workload of the Copa América and the increased pressure, things didn’t go as planned in the first half of the season. In the last few months he has been able to find his way back to his former strengths and, in addition to a jump in form, the player also made a name for himself with a dream goal. Numerous big clubs have put out feelers for him, including Juventus and Atlético, but Udinese know what they have in the talent and would only be willing to discuss a sale for more than €30m.”
English & Scottish Serie A players: Tomori & Abraham among most valuable
There have also been market value changes for English and Scottish players in Serie A. While former Chelsea players Fikayo Tomori (Milan) and Tammy Abraham (Roma) both solidify their spots among the most valuable Serie A players with an upgrade of €5m to €50m each, Arsenal loanee Ainsley Maitland-Niles drops from €12m to €10m after a disappointing spell with AS Roma.
Bologna full-back and Scotland international Aaron Hickey is one of the winners of the update and rises by another €3m to €18m – his fourth straight upgrade since the summer of 2021. The youngster has already attracted interest from the Premier League and continues to close in on the top 5 of the most valuable Scottish footballers.
How Transfermarkt market values work
The Transfermarkt market values are calculated, taking into account various pricing models. A major factor is the Transfermarkt community, whose members discuss and evaluate player market values in detail. In general, the Transfermarkt market values are not to be equated with transfer fees.
The goal is not to predict a price but an expected value of a player in a free market. Both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant in determining market values. Examples of this are listed below. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (you can find the detailed market value definition here).
