Charlotte FC interested in Stuttgart’s Mateo Klimowicz – Player is on the Discovery List

Club wants a number 10

Major League Soccer expansion side Charlotte FC are interested in talented VfB Stuttgart playmaker Mateo Klimowicz sources with direct knowledge of the situation have told Transfermarkt. According to those sources, Klimowicz is currently on the club’s Discovery List. Being placed on the Discovery List, means that Charlotte have the player’s exclusive MLS rights—every club is allowed to have seven players on their list—but it does not necessarily mean that the club will execute a transfer.

Whether the club can actually sign Klimowicz is another question. The 21-year-old son of former Bundesliga star Diego Klimowicz has featured for Germany’s U21 national team and was part of the team that won the UEFA European Under-21 Championship (four games no goals) last summer. Also eligible for Argentina, Klimowicz has, however, struggled at times this last season and his market value has dropped from $5.5 million to just $2.2 million.

A typical number 10, Klimowicz managed just one assist in 15 games for Stuttgart and did not feature at all from matchday 23 to 34 as the club successfully managed to fight of relegation. Charlotte, in the meantime, have recently fired head coach Miguel Ángel Ramírez and it is unclear how his departure will impact the club’s transfer strategy this upcoming summer. But prior to his departure a source told Transfermarkt that the club was actively looking for a number 10 and that Klimowicz would fit that profile perfectly.

Klimowicz wants to leave Stuttgart – VfB pursuing a loan

Whether Stuttgart will agree to a transfer is another question. After narrowly escaping relegation at the end of the season, sporting director Sven Mislintat and American head coach Pellegrino Matarazzo are currently fine tuning the squad for the upcoming season. Bild reported last week that the club wants to drastically reduce the size of the squad and that Klimowicz is among the candidates to be moved out. At the same time, Stuttgart are not looking for a permanent deal but rather want to loan out the talented midfielder.
