Spaniard heading to England?
Barcelona president Joan Laporta has admitted that he doesn’t like the “situation” surrounding Gavi’s future at the club and fears the player’s agent is stalling over a new contract offer. Gavi currently has a deal with Barca that is set to expire in 2023, which would potentially force the Spanish giants to sell him this summer if he doesn’t sign a new deal. The midfielder joined the club’s famed La Masia academy in 2015 at the age of 11, before signing his first professional contract in 2020. Since then, the teenager has gone from strength to strength, where he is now considered an important member of Xavi’s first team squad. However, that may not last for much longer.

Reports in Spain have speculated for some time that Gavi’s representatives have rejected no less than three contract offers from Barca. And the club’s president has now publicly admitted that he is getting worried about the situation. “His representative has had the renewal offer on the table for a long time. We have no news that he has accepted it,” said Laporta in an interview with L’Esportiu. When asked if the club were concerned about Gavi not accepted the offer yet, Laporta added: “Yes, because we don’t understand. He’s a player we all like; He is 17 years old, has a present and a great future at Barca, and we do not understand why his representative is playing and comparing. I think the club’s proposal, within our salary levels, is more than acceptable.”
Gavi’s future at Barca in doubt – will his future be in England?
One of the reasons why Gavi may be putting off a new deal with Barca could be down to the young player simply considering his options before he commits his future to the Spanish giants. Which is perfectly understandable when we consider what clubs are reportedly interested in signing the young talent. Reports in England from late last year heavily linked Gavi with moves to Manchester United and Chelsea. And while the former may not be as enticing without Champions League football next year, the latter may have a bumper transfer budget to play with this summer and grand ambitions of getting back to the top of English and European football under Thomas Thuchel next season.
However, the most persistent link continues to be a move to Liverpool. Reports in England have suggested that the Barca star has a release clause of around €48 million, which would certainly entice an Anfield side that may be looking to upgrade on their midfield options ahead of next season. Whether or not such rumours are true remains to be seen, but Gavi’s future will continue to be a contentious topic in Barca until he agrees to a new deal.
