Complete Update

After Boca Juniors’ final victory, Transfermarkt has completely updated Argentina’s Copa de la Liga Profesional de Fútbol. The most valuable player remains new Manchester City striker Julián Álvarez with a market value of €23 million. The striker once again highlighted his goalscoring instinct for River Plate throughout the 2022 season.

Argentina market value update

The biggest winner of the update is Álvarez’s teammate Enzo Fernández. The 21-year-old River Plate talent has become the centerpiece of Marcelo Gallardo’s tactical system and has been involved in 14 goals over 19 games. European top clubs like Real Madrid, Man City, Benfica, Milan, and Inter Milan are all interested. With a market value increase of €6.5 million to €15 million, Fernández is now the second most valuable player in Argentina.

Also in the top 10 is Carlos Alcaraz from Racing Club. The 19-year-old midfielder was not even in the top 100 previously and is considered one of the biggest surprises of the Copa de la Liga Profesional. Alcaraz has increased his market value from €1.5 million to €8 million. Another player with an increased market value is Luis Vázquez. Linked with a move to Dortmund, the Boca Juniors striker increased his market value by €3.8 million to now €4.5 million.

The players with the biggest market value drops all player for River Plate and Boca Juniors. Nicolás de la Cruz (€13m) and Cristian Pavón (€5.5m) both dropped by €3 million. Both players were once considered big talents but could not confirm the high expectations placed on them. Pavón also was involved in a transfer conflict with his club at the start of the year and wants to leave Boca Juniors when his contract expires in the summer. The attacking player has since not played for the club. Pavón’s next destination has not yet been revealed.

How Transfermarkt market values work

The Transfermarkt market values are calculated, taking into account various pricing models. A major factor is the Transfermarkt community, whose members discuss and evaluate player market values in detail. In general, the Transfermarkt market values are not to be equated with transfer fees.

The goal is not to predict a price but an expected value of a player in a free market. Both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant in determining market values. Examples of this are listed below. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (you can find the detailed market value definition here).
