Nottm Forest’s next star
The English Championship regular season has come to an end and just before the play-offs decide which teams will earn promotion and be dealt relegation from the league, it seemed like the perfect opportunity for Transfermarkt to update the market values of each player in the division. And it brought up some very interesting numbers.
Fulham battering ram Aleksandar Mitrović remains the most valuable player in the Championship, following another impressive goal scoring campaign with the London club. And Bournemouth were once again the side with the largest grouping of valuable players over £10 million. However, a number of young players also made significant jumps in their own values, to represent the remarkable strides they’ve made in the second tier this season.
For example, the second most improved player in terms of market value in the division was none other than young attacking midfielder Fábio Carvalho, who saw his value increase by £7.65m prior to his expected move to Liverpool this season. And just ahead of him was Hull City winger Keane Lewis-Potter, whose market value increased by £9.9m. However, the most improved and perhaps most exciting prospect in the division was none other than Nottingham Forest forward Brennan Johnson, whose remarkable campaign the Reds has seen his value shoot up by £12.6m.
Finally proving his worth in the first team – How Johnson found his stride at Nottm Forest
It should come as no big surprise to see Johnson thriving in the Championship this season because the young forward made remarkable progress in the English lower leagues before stepping up to the Nottm Forest first team over the past 10 months. After a lacklustre 2019/20 season, Johnson was sent on loan to Lincoln City in the following campaign and it was there that he honed his goal scoring ability.

Played predominantly on the left and right wing or as an attacking midfielder, Johnson thrived in League One and bagged no less than 13 goals and 14 assists in just 48 games for Lincoln City. And that proved to be more than enough evidence for his parent club that he was ready to make the step up and lead the line this time around. Indeed, despite a slow start to life in the Championship, with just one goal and one assist in his first seven league games, Johnson then hit an impressive run of form in September with two goals and two assists in five games, but really began to hit his stride around December time. From matchday 22 onwards, the young Wales international picked up no less than 13 goals and six assists as his side went from sixteenth in the table up to third place.
Not only has Johnson proved his worth in the Championship at a remarkable young age, but his goals and assists have had a very direct impact on his team’s ability to punch above their weight and secure a play-off spot at the end of the season. Whether the 20-year-old talent can complete the ultimate goal of taking his side back to the Premier League remains to be seen, but there’s no doubt that his reputation as an exciting, young talent is now secured either way.
