Karim Adeyemi joins Borussia Dortmund from Salzburg – “I signed to win titles”

Borussia Dortmund have confirmed the signing of Red Bull Salzburg striker Karim Adeyemi on the very same day that they announced the sale of Erling Haaland to Manchester City. The Germany international joins the Bundesliga giants for a reported fee of €30 million and has signed a deal that will keep him at the club until 2027.

“As a little boy, I was fascinated by Dortmund’s fast-paced tempo football,” said the young striker on the Dortmund website. “That’s why I quickly decided that I would like to join BVB when I heard about Dortmund’s interest. I also consciously signed for the long term because I am convinced that we will be an exciting team that, with the support of the fantastic Dortmund fans, will be able to play for and win titles in the medium term.”

Adeyemi began his career in Bavaria and was once a youth player at Bayern Munich, but a contract dispute forced the player to leave the club in 2012, where he then joined local side SpVgg Unterhaching—the Regionalliga Bayern side will receive €7 million of the overall transfer fee. After six years at the lower league club, Adeyemi was then signed by Salzburg and went from strength to strength with the Austrian giants. In no less than two years at the Red Bull club, Adeyemi picked up 33 goals and 23 assists in 92 games for the Austrian side. With a notably impressive record in the Champions League too, which saw him pick up four goals and two assists in just 11 matches in the European competition. During his time at the club, the Germany international won three Austrian Bundesliga titles and three Austrian Cups.

Adayemi in, Haaland out – Dortmund’s rebuild continues 

The most notable aspect of Adeyemi’s announced signing with Dortmund was the fact that it was confirmed on the very same day that Haaland’s €60m move to Man City was also confirmed. Which undoubtedly leads to the suggestion that 20-year-old forward may have been signed as a direct replacement for his Norwegian predecessor. 

However, Adayemi wasn’t Dortmund’s first piece of business before the summer transfer window has even opened. In February, the Westfalenstadion side confirmed a pre-contract agreement with Bayern defender Niklas Süle and in early May the club also confirmed that they had reached an agreement with Freiburg to sign central defender Nico Schlotterbeck too. Whether Adeyemi’s arrival will bring a close to the club’s spring transfer business or herald an even bigger splurge of signings in the summer remains to be seen.
