Update A-League
Transfermarkt has updated the market values of Australia’s A-League. The most valuable player is no longer Daniel Sturridge. The 32-year-old dropped by €2 million to €600,000 and fell out of the top 20. The former English national team player joined Perth Glory last October but, due to injuries, managed just six short appearances and no goals. It is his lowest market value since 2007, when he was still an academy player at Manchester City.
While Sturridge, thanks to his multi-million downgrade, is the biggest loser of the update, Marco Tilio from Melbourne City is headed in the opposite direction. The forward saw his market value increase by €600,000 to €900,000—the biggest increase in the league. Brazilian Daniel Penha is another big winner. The 23-year-old, who is currently on loan from Atlético Mineiro to Newcastle United Jets saw his market value increase by €450,000. The attacking player is one of the big stars of his team and has scored four goals and 11 assists, the most in the league, in 22 matches. With a market value of €750,000, Penha has achieved a new personal best. The Brazilian now makes up 10% of his club’s overall squad value of €7.1 million.
It is the second-lowest squad value in the league. Only Brisbane Roar have a lower overall squad value (€6.1 million). Melbourne City lead that ranking with an overall squad value of €11.6 million. In Jamie MacLaren (€1.5m), City also have one of the two most valuable players in the league. Maclaren shares first place with Melbourne Victory forward Roderick Miranda.
How Transfermarkt market values work
The Transfermarkt market values are calculated, taking into account various pricing models. A major factor is the Transfermarkt community, whose members discuss and evaluate player market values in detail. In general, the Transfermarkt market values are not to be equated with transfer fees.
The goal is not to predict a price but an expected value of a player in a free market. Both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant in determining market values. Examples of this are listed below. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (you can find the detailed market value definition here).
