How Salah’s Premier League goalscoring record compares to his Champions League record

Liverpool in trouble? 

Liverpool will have to be at their very best when they take on Villarreal in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final on Wednesday night. 

The Spanish side comfortably disposed of favourites Bayern Munich in the last round, conceding just one goal in 180 minutes of football and managed a similar feat against Juventus in the Last 16 too. 

Indeed, Jurgen Klopp’s team will know that nothing short of an excellent, attacking performance will break through the Yellow Submarine and that may demand a particularly impressive performance from Mohamed Salah. 

However, while the Egypt international is often regarded as one of the best goalscorers in the Premier League, his record in the latter rounds of the Champions League can often leave something to be desired.

Salah’s record in the knock-out rounds 

So far this season the star forward has managed just one goal from four knock-out appearances for Klopp’s side, after scoring a single goal in the 2-0 victory over Inter Milan. 

Although Salah put in a solid performance at this stage last season, with three goals from four games before Liverpool were knocked out by Real Madrid, his record in the two seasons prior to that saw the striker bag just two goals from eight knock-out games – even if one of those goals was scored in the final.

Indeed, while Salah was super in the 2017/18 season, with five goals in seven games, his overall record in Champions League knock-out games for Liverpool stands at just 11 goals in 23 games. 

When broken down into match averages, that works out at just 0.44 goals scored per 90 minutes of Champions League knock-out football. In comparison, Salah’s average in the Premier League for Liverpool stands at 0.72 goals per 90 minutes of football.
