Star-studded but dysfunctional – Ten Hag looks set to make huge changes at Man Utd

Big changes coming at Man Utd

Depending on who you ask, Erik ten Hag has just agreed to the best job in European football or potential the very worst. The current Ajax manager is set to make the move to Manchester United this summer, where he will replace interim manager Ralf Rangnick and become the club’s new permanent manager.

Tasked with taking the Old Trafford side back to the top of the Premier League and European football, Ten Hag will be asked to do something that no manager has managed at the club since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.

Indeed, the former Bayern Munich youth coach will be asked to achieve a feat that David Moyes, José Mourinho, Louis Van Gaal and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer all failed in dramatic fashion to do. However, unlike all of those managers that came before him, Ten Hag may finally get his chance to cut through this star-studded but dysfunctional Man Utd squad and do as he pleases with it.

Summer sale at Old Trafford

Man Utd’s bizarre situation is perhaps best summed up by the fact that the club have some of the most valuable players in the world and the seventh most valuable squad in all of European football, yet the team look set to miss out on Champions League football next season. As such, a number of difficult decisions may need to be made to cut short some stars that no longer provide the same allure on the pitch as they may still do off it.

The most obvious departures will first come from the players whose contracts are set to expire. These include Juan Mata, Edinson Cavani, Jesse Lingard and, most notably, Paul Pogba. Nemanja Matic has also confirmed that he’ll leave the club this summer too.

However, the big changes at Man Utd may not stop there. Cristiano Ronaldo, Marcus Rashford, Luke Shaw, Fred, Diogo Dalot, Phil Jones and David de Gea will all be entering the final years of their contracts at the club next season and that may push the club into confirming which players will be offered new deals and which ones may be encouraged to depart ahead of the new season. Either way, Ten Hag is likely to make some big changes at the club and Man Utd’s list of their top 10 most valuable players is bound to change significantly over the next 12 months.
