Update
Edgar Ié’s time at Trabzonspor came to an end rather abruptly. The 27-year-old central defender was unfortunate enough to tear his cruciate ligament in a league clash with Altay SK in late December. As a result, the Turkish club cancelled the player’s contract, even though it was set to run until the end of the season. An unexpected move for what was the club’s fifth most valuable player. The Portuguese defender is unlikely to find a new club before the end of the season, following reported interest from Venezia in February never materialising into an actual offer. As such, Transfermarkt has lowered the defender’s market value in a recent update for players without a club. Ié is now worth €6.5 million, down from €7.5 million due to him no longer being contracted to a club.
As is usually the case with players that are unattached to any clubs, they can only get back into the swing of regular game time by taking part in training at a club in the form of a trial or by finding a new club that will sign them. One such example is former Spain international Diego Costa. The 33-year-old played for Atlético (216 games and 83 goals) and Chelsea (120 games and 58 goals) over the course of his career. However, since terminating his contract with Atlético-MG in January, the veteran striker is now on the market as a free agent. Due to his age, Costa is now some distance away from a career high value of €60 million in 2018 and is worth just €4 million. He was previously linked with a move to US Salernitana earlier in the year, but nothing came of it.
Another player that has seen his value drop recently is Jürgen Damm, the former Mexico international with German roots. The 29-year-old winger cost Tigres UANL around €9 million in 2015 but left Atlanta United in February after a year and a half. He is now valued at just €1.2 million, dropping from €1.5 million in the recent player value update. After the recent update, 22 players without a club still have a market value that is set in the millions. Click here to view all the devalued free agents.
