Six goals and assists in four games – Werner finally looks back to his best at Chelsea

Chelsea’s new star striker? 

Very few things seem to be going right for Thomas Tuchel and his Chelsea side at the moment. 

After being knocked out of the Champions League by Real Madrid, the Stamford Bridge then scraped by Crystal Palace in the semi-finals of the FA Cup, only to then pick up their second defeat in three Premier League games in a 4-2 defeat to Arsenal on Wednesday night. 

However, if there is one speck of hope among Chelsea’s misfiring squad it is none other than striker Timo Werner. 

The Germany international has struggled to prove his worth at the London club since Chelsea paid RB Leipzig €53 million for the player in 2020, with just 23 goals in 85 games to date for Werner. 

And yet, it has been the 26-year-old talent that has shown up where so many of Tuchel’s side have let him down in recent weeks. 

Werner’s improved form for Chelsea 

The striker bounced back into form in mid April, when Tuchel started him against lowly Southampton, who made little effort to stop Chelsea or Werner in particular from finding the back of the net. 

On the day the German forward bagged two goals, as his side ran out comfortable 6-0 winners over the Saints. And it proved to be the perfect bounce game for Werner to regain his form. 

That was evident for all to see in the second leg of their quarter-final clash with Madrid. Although Chelsea narrowly lost the tie, Werner looked sharp with a goal and an assist against the Spanish giants. 

Such a performance then earned the striker yet another starting role against Palace in the FA Cup, where Werner once again came up with the goods by assisting Mason Mount’s goal in the 76th minute. 

Then, as if that wasn’t impressive enough, the striker then picked up another goal in the disappointing 4-2 defeat to Arsenal in midweek. 

As such, Werner has now bagged four goals and two assists in his last four games for Chelsea and is undoubtedly beginning to look like the player they signed from RB Leipzig over two years ago.
