100th meeting
In front of 16,722 spectators at BC Place, Portland Timbers have won what was the 100th fixture against rivals Vancouver Whitecaps (2-3). Part of the Cascadia Cup, this match dates back to the old NASL days, and the ‘Caps went into the game with a 42-39-18 record. The Major League Soccer reality, however, is a bit different; here, Portland have now won 15 out of 30 matches and drawn six more.

Tonight was no different. The Timbers took the lead in the 42nd minute, and Dairon Asprilla scored from the spot. It was the first highlight of what was otherwise a plodding start to the game. “I am pissed, really pissed. I think in the first half, we fell in their trap,” Whitecaps head coach Vanni Sartini said. “They’re a sleepy team, and we went sleepy too.” The goal woke up the game and started a long chain of VAR decisions. But before we get there, Jaroslaw Niezgoda made it 2-0 for Portland in the 60th minute after a mistake by defender Florian Jungwirth.
The Whitecaps appeared to be beaten but got back into the game in the 76th minute when Cristian Dajomé scored with a shot from inside the box. It appeared the Whitecaps were back in this game for a brief moment, but just two minutes after their goal, Yimmi Chará once again doubled the lead. That should have ended it right there and then.
Despite late Whitecaps rally – Portland Timbers hang on
But there would be more drama in the game. With the addition of Pedro Vite in the 61st minute for captain Russell Teibert, the Whitecaps finally were dynamic and aggressive and clearly the better team. “I wanted more bite and attack,” Sartini said. “They did what they were supposed to do.”
In the 86th minute, Whitecaps were awarded a penalty after a lengthy VAR review but Dajomé missed from the spot. Then in the 94th minute, the Whitecaps went back to the spot once again, and once again, VAR intervened, but referee Silviu Petrescu stood by his decision. Ryan Gauld scored, and the Whitecaps pressed hard for an equalizer but ultimately could not find a way through.
