113 players updated
Transfermarkt has updated 113 market values in the Bundesliga—the biggest increase has been experienced by former Paris Saint-Germain players and aspiring German national team players. In terms of squad value, Bayer Leverkusen and Hoffenheim saw the biggest increase—Borussia Dortmund, Borussia Mönchengladbach, VfL Wolfsburg and VfB Stuttgart dropped significantly.
Christopher Nkunku (RB Leipzig) and Moussa Diaby (Leverkusen) have made the step from good Bundesliga players to international stars. Both saw their market value increase by €10 million and Diaby with a market value of now €55 million and Nkunku with a market value of €65 million would now be among the most valuable players at their former academy club PSG. “Nkunku is one of the most productive midfielders in Europe and has been nominated for the French national team,” market value admin Julius Weißenstein (Savarez03) said. “His market value increase is consequential.”
Malen, Kimmich & Co. – The most valuable Bundesliga players
Nkunku is now among the ten most valuable Bundesliga players and has decreased the gap to Bayern wingers Leroy Sané and Serge Gnabry (both €70m). In Kingsley Coman—from €55 million to €60 million—another former PSG talent is now in the top 10 of the most valuable Bundesliga players.
Freiburg’s new national team player Nico Schlotterbeck increased his market value by another €8 million and has now seen his market value grow from €4 million to €28 million within one year. “Schlotterbeck has shown good and constant performances and is one of Germany’s biggest defensive talents,” market value admin Martin Freundl (Soyen) said. “As a result, we anticipate that the demand in him will only increase. The center-back has already been linked with a move to BVB and Bayern Munich.”
Bayern Munich: Downgrade for Upamecano, Sabitzer, and Nianzou
Bayern’s defense, in the meantime, has seen some significant downgrades in the intermediary update. Dayot Upamecano drops by €10 million to now €45 million. “Upamecano’s downward trend has manifested itself since the winter update,” Freundl said. “Individual mistakes have led to significant criticism and fans consider him the biggest security risk in Bayern’s defense. His poor performances will have been evident for potentially interested clubs—as a result of that development a devaluation is only consequential.”
Bayern’s Marcel Sabitzer (-€5m to €22m) and Tanguy Nianzou (-€2m to €9m) have also seen their market values drop. Both have been bench players with no sign of breaking permanently into the starting XI.
Anton Stach (Mainz) and David Raum (Hoffenheim), in the meantime, have established themselves as Bundesliga starters. “Last year Stach and Raum were promoted together and crowned their season by winning the U21 European Championship,” Weißenstein said. “Both have fully arrived in the Bundesliga, have been nominated for the German senior national team and now have the opportunity to add to their 41 games that they have already played together.” Raum saw his market value increase from €12 million to €17 million and Stach from €4 million to €7 million.
Bundesliga squad values: Bayer Leverkusen top, VfB Stuttgart flop
In terms of squad value, Raum’s club Hoffenheim was one of the biggest winners with an increase of €14 million—just behind Bayer Leverkusen, whose players collectively saw their market value grow by €17 million. VfB Stuttgart are headed in the opposite direction. The Swabians experienced a squad value drop of €20.6 million. Bayern too are among the losers. The Rekordmeister dropped by €10.8 million.
How Transfermarkt market values work
The Transfermarkt market values are calculated, taking into account various pricing models. A major factor is the Transfermarkt community, whose members discuss and evaluate player market values in detail. In general, the Transfermarkt market values are not to be equated with transfer fees.
The goal is not to predict a price but an expected value of a player in a free market. Both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant in determining market values. Examples of this are listed below. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (you can find the detailed market value definition here).
