Since 2017 at VfL
VfL Wolfsburg and John Anthony Brooks will go their separate ways at the end of the season. The US men’s national team center-back announced that he will leave the club when his contract expires in June 2022. “I’d like to thank the VfL Wolfsburg management for their honest discussions, but I’ve decided to take on a new challenge,” Brooks said in a club statement. The 29-year-old left his destination open.
Brooks joined Wolfsburg for €17 million from Hertha Berlin in the summer of 2017. The deal made him the most expensive defender in Wolfsburg’s history. The 45-times USMNT player is also the fourth most expensive all-time signing in the club’s history.

Overview
“I’ve had the opportunity to play football at a high level for five years and it’s obviously not easy for me to leave after such a long time,” Brooks said. “I wish the team and the entire club all the best and will give my all for VfL until my last game.” Wolfsburg sporting director Marcel Schäfer added: ““We’ve had five intense years with many highlights, including reaching the Champions League, but there have also been difficult periods on the pitch that we’ve conquered together.”
