Done deal
The biggest transfer thriller on Deadline Day has found a positive end after all. As FC Barcelona announced on Wednesday morning, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang joins the Catalans from Arsenal with immediate effect. The former Borussia Dortmund striker receives a contract running until June 2025, which includes an option for an early exit in the summer of 2023. In addition, an exit clause of €100 million has been set, the club announced. A transfer fee is not due after the 32-year-old dissolved his contract in London on Tuesday – most recently it was said that the Gunners were just happy to get Aubameyang completely off the payroll.
The Times reported that Arsenal had to pay their former captain almost £7 million to terminate his deal, which earned him £350,000 a week. The cash-strapped Catalans had been unable to raise additional money due to the hoped-for, but ultimately failed, departure of winger Ousmane Dembélé.

Aubameyang’s move to the Blaugranas gives him the opportunity to now feature for a club in Europe’s fifth top league. The Gabon international was previously active in Italy (AC Milan, without playing for the first team), France (Saint-Étienne, Monaco and Lille), Germany (BVB) and England (Arsenal) in his career.
In 2015, then still playing in the Bundesliga, Aubameyang stated in a L’Équipe interview: “I want to pass the limit of 20 league goals, because I hope to play for Real Madrid one day. I’ve always dreamed of Spain.” Now joins Barcelona’s arch-rivals in the last minutes of the January transfer window 2022. On Deadline Day, a real transfer thriller had developed before it became apparent in the evening that a deal between Arsenal and Barça would go through after all.
