Free transfer, but expensive in the future?
Dele Alli has lost €75 million in market value since the beginning of June 2019 – a drop from €100 million to €25 million. Once one of the greatest hopes of English football now wants to restart his career. To do so, the 25-year-old midfielder is joining Everton after six and a half years at Tottenham.
The Toffees, who were very active on Deadline Day – head coach Frank Lampard and midfielder Donny van de Beek (on loan from Man United) had previously signed – have provided Alli with a contract running until 2024. The deal is said to be an initial free transfer, but a potential transfer fee can rise to up to €40 million due to bonus payments, as Fabrizio Romano reports. English media are reporting that a first instalment, worth €12 million, will be due after 20 appearances.

The contract of the 37-time England international with Spurs still ran until 2024. Alli, who has not been first choice for some time, was Lampard’s desired player, along with van de Beek. Already at the end of last year, Tottenham had given the midfielder the go-ahead for a winter transfer, according to media reports.
Everton signing Alli: Newcastle come away empty-handed
As the The Athletic journalist David Ornstein wrote, Newcastle still tried to hijack the deal at the last minute – obviously without success. According to the report, the Magpies wanted to sign Alli because a transfer of Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard had fallen through.
