Deals on deadline day?
Is there more to come for West Ham on deadline day? Reinforcements are being discussed for both attack and defence, while Newcastle could win the race to sign a future prospect against the Irons.
As reported by Sky Sports, Darwin Núñez of Benfica could be on his way to London. The 22-year-old forward joined the Portuguese side from UD Almería for €24 million in the summer of 2020 and has since scored 20 goals in 25 matches. The clubs are said to have already agreed on a fee. According to The Athletic, though, Núñez has not shown much interest in a move so far. Discussions are therefore also being held with Reims prospect Hugo Ekitike, in whom Newcastle are interested as well and most likely have the better chances.
A deal for Núñez would be difficult from a logistical point of view as he is currently on internaional duty with Uruguay and preparing for Tuesday’s World Cup qualifier against Venezuela in his home country. The medical examinations ahead of a move would have to be organised in South America. Then again, the transfer of Bruno Guimarães to Newcastle, having seen formalities and medicals being fully completed in Brazil, shows that this is possible.

Meanwhile, Newcastle are competitors for the Irons when it comes to signing Ekitike. The Magpies are said to be leading the race with an offer that could rise to £33 million, as Keith Downie reports for Sky Sports. The initial fee would amount to £25 million. For West Ham, Rhys Healey of Toulouse could instead become a more affordable option.
In France, West Ham have also identified a potential new signing for the defense: Duje Caleta-Car from Olympique Marseille. As reported by L’Équipe, OM president Pablo Longoria was not yet satisfied with the offer from the East Londoners on Sunday, who are also negotiating with Newcastle United about a transfer of their central defender Issa Diop (25). It could be a busy deadline day for both outfits.
