“Need to get him match fit”
Christian Eriksen is back in professional football, and back in the Premier League. Half a year after his cardiac arrest during a European Championship match in Copenhagen in June, the 29-year-old midfielder signed for Brentford FC until the end of the season. Since Eriksen had previously terminated his contract at Inter Milan by mutual agreement, he arrives on a free transfer. Thus, with a market value of €15 million, the so far most valuable free agent is off the market.

For Eriksen, it is a return to England after two years having played for Tottenham Hotspur from 2013 till the end 0f 2019. His move to Inter in the winter transfer window 2020 gave the Spurs their sixth-highest transfer fee in the club’s history. The Dane went to Italy for €27 million, where he is no longer allowed to play professional football with a defibrillator.
“We have taken an unbelievable opportunity to bring a World Class player to Brentford“, manager Thomas Frank said about the transfer which arouses international attention for the Bees. Frank has already coached Eriksen during their time at Denmark’s Under-17. Now, Eriksen hasn’t trained with a team for seven months but worked on his own, as Frank emphasized. “He is fit but we will need to get him match fit and I am looking forward to seeing him work with the players and staff to get back towards his highest level.”
