Permanent or loan deal?
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will not move from Arsenal to Barcelona on loan as of now. The planned transfer of the Gabonese is turning into a thriller in recent hours – with an open outcome. As The Athletic journalist David Ornstein reports, the talks between the clubs have broken down because of disagreements over the payment of the striker’s wages. Aubameyang, who is already in Barcelona, will return to London – unless the Catalans can increase their offer in terms of salary after all.
Update, 08:39 p.m. GMT: The transfer thriller apparently comes to a happy ending for everyone involved: According to The Athletic, FC Barcelona have verbally agreed with Arsenal to sign Aubameyang on loan for six months. In addition, there is said to be an option for another year. The attacking player is expected to undergo the pending and long-planned medical this evening. Sky Sports, meanwhile, reports that the deal is going to be a permanent one.

Update, 8:31 p.m GMT: At the Mundo Deportivo gala, Laporta revealed in the evening: “Mateu Alemany (CEO) told me that it looks like Aubameyang will come.” In return, Ousmane Dembélé could leave the club – there is interest from the Premier League. “The last option for Dembélé is a move to an English club,” Laporta said.
Update, 06:37 p.m. GMT: According to Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal have told Aubameyang that the club does not intend to reach a compromise with FC Barcelona regarding the payment of the salary. The ball is now in the Catalans’ court, and they, in turn, will have to try to get the deal over the line – in other words, Barça will pay the full salary or there will be no transfer. President Joan Laporta, meanwhile, said: “We still have options open. We are working on it – and we will do so until the last minute.” On signing Aubameyang, he club boss added: “It’s very complicated, but there is hope.”
On the other hand, reporter Gerard Romero, who is well connected with the Blaugranas, stated shortly afterwards – citing sources from the hospital in Barcelona – that Aubameyang’s medical is still scheduled. Adrià Albets disagrees, writing that the check scheduled for 5 p.m. local time will not take place as things stand because the economic differences between Arsenal and Barça could not be resolved and the player could not be registered. The journalist refers to sources within the club. Albets finishes his tweet with words “The party goes on”.

On Sunday, it was said that FC Barcelona were working on reinforcing their squad and were close to a six-month loan of the Arsenal forward. The biggest hurdle quickly proved to be the payment of Aubameyang’s salary, which amounts to £350,000 (about €420,000) a week. Spanish newspaper Sport reported later in the day that the 32-year-old was willing to forgo much of his wages to play for the top Spanish club “practically for free”.
Arsenal “surprised” by Aubameyang’s trip to Barcelona
According to consistent media reports, the former Borussia Dortmund striker, whose big dream was to play for Real Madrid one day, had landed in Barcelona on Monday and was on his way to a medical check. As Sky Sports reports, the Gunners were “surprised” by Aubameyang’s trip to Barcelona, as the clubs have not yet reached an agreement. Something similar was heard from Spain, where no representative of the Catalans is said to have expected the arrival of the attacker and consequently no one picked him up at the airport.
