Newcastle target Robin Gosens joins Inter Milan – Most expensive German in Serie A history

By

Loan plus obligation to buy

Robin Gosens plays in Serie A for a club from Lombardy with black and blue shirts – in the future, however, it will no longer be Atalanta, but Inter Milan. Both clubs have officially confirmed the transfer of the 27-year-old Germany international. Gosens will initially join the Nerazzurri on loan, with an obligation to buy in the summer. The left-back will then receive a permanent contract running until 2026.

With the transfer, Inter make Gosens the most expensive German signing in Serie A history. According to consistent media reports, the obligation amounts to €22 million plus possible bonus payments, which could raise the fee to a total of €25 million. This was the initial demand of Atalanta, where the contract of the attack-minded defender was running until 2023. In the rich history of German players in the Italian top flight, Mario Gómez, who had moved from Bayern Munich to Fiorentina for €15.5 million in 2013/14, holds the top spot so far.

At the same time, only four departures in Atalanta’s history were more expensive: Dejan Kulusevski (€35 million to Juventus), Alessandro Bastoni (€31.1 million to Inter), Franck Kessié (€24 million to AC Milan) and Andrea Conti (€24 million to AC Milan). Inter, meanwhile, paid a higher transfer fee for a new signing 26 times. In the ranking of the most expensive German players in football history, Gosens ranks 26th behind Timo Werner (€22.2 million to RB Leipzig) and tied with Mario Götze.

Inter signing Gosens: Outstanding development at Atalanta

Gosens, in whom Newcastle were interested as well, leaves Atalanta after 157 matches, 29 goals and 21 assists in five and a half years. In recent years, the Emmerich native had an outstanding development under head coach Gian Piero Gasperini: The wing-back, who had never been active in Germany as a professional, arrived as a largely unknown signing from Heracles Almelo in the summer of 2017 to become a key player in Gasperini’s 3-5-2 system and also recommended himself for the national team through strong performances in the Champions League.

In recent months, however, Gosens had been absent due to a serious thigh injury, it is also open when he can start playing for Inter. The transfer is therefore already seen as an addition for the new season. “On the left side, two players could leave the team of head coach Simone Inzaghi due to expiring contracts,” Jatin Dietl, Area Manager Transfermarkt IT, says. “In the case of Aleksandar Kolarov, this is already virtually certain and with Ivan Perisic, who is playing a very strong season, there is no agreement on an extension so far. Only homegrown Federico Dimarco remains at the club in this position. Gosens fits Inzaghi like a glove as a counterpart to Denzel Dumfries on the right side due to his quality on the attack.”
