Bruno Guimarães set for Newcastle medical – Second most expensive winter deal

Would quadruple salary

As reported by both the English Guardian and French L’Équipe, Newcastle are working on the signing of midfielder Bruno Guimarães from Olympique Lyon. The Magpies are said to be pushing for a winter transfer and are willing to pay a fee of €40 million for the Brazil international, it was initially announced.

As The Athletic, among others, now reports, there are increasing signs that the transfer will be completed soon. Guimarães, who plays with the Seleção in Ecuador on Thursday, is set to undergo a medical in Brazil afterwards. According to Sky Sports, the transfer fee will amount to around £30 million – the equivalent of around €36 million.

The reported sum would make the right-footed midfielder the second most expensive winter transfer in the world behind Ferran Torres (for €55 million from Man City to Barça). Guimarães would be Newcastle’s fifth addition in the current transfer window, alongside loan returnees Matty Longstaff and Jake Turner and January signings Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood.

Guimarães to quadruple salary – Arsenal and Juve interested as well

Whether Lyon would agree to a deal and let their third most valuable player in the squad leave at short notice initially seemed questionable. According to reports, Arsenal and Juventus were interested in buying the Brazilian in the summer. For the player, however, the financial aspect could have a decisive influence on his willingness to move on in the winter: Newcastle are said to be tempting Guimarães with four times his current salary, which is said to amount €220,000 a month.
