2nd most valuable winter deal
Lucas Digne has left Everton after three and a half years, making it the second most valuable move of the transfer window so far. The left-back, whose market value is €30 million, is joining Aston Villa. On Wednesday, the 28-year-old completed his medical at the Villans, who prevailed against notable competition.
According to reports, the Toffees will receive just under €30 million (£25 million) for the 43-time France international, whose contract in Liverpool ran until 2025, which would make him the joint sixth most expensive left-back in the world. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports about a slightly lower fee of €27 million. Villa have only spent more than €30 million on a new player three times in the club’s history.

For the team of head coach Steven Gerrard, it is the second high-profile signing in a matter of days. Last week, Philippe Coutinho had already joined on loan from FC Barcelona. Now, Digne also decided to make the move to Birmingham, although he probably had other options. Sky Sports recently reported that Chelsea, West Ham, Newcastle and Napoli had also shown interest.
Everton already signed a replacement for Digne in Mykolenko
At Everton, a departure became inevitable after the left-footed defender fell out of favour with head coach Rafael Benítez and was not playing recently. In addition, the Toffeees already brought in Dynamo Kyiv’s Vitaliy Mykolenko as a replacement for Digne, who had arrived from Barcelona for €20.2 million in 2018 and has since made 127 appearances (6 goals/20 assists).
