Gerhard Struber has turned down an offer to become Ralf Rangnick‘s assistant manager at Manchester United. “There was an inquiry made,” the 44-year-old said to the Sky show Talk und Tore“It isn’t a secret that Ralf Rangnick and I know each other well and value one another.” Struber worked in Red Bull Salzburg’s youth academy under Rangnick and is currently the head coach at Major League Soccer side New York Red Bulls

“I am honored to receive an offer from England,” the Austrian, who previously coached Barnsley from 2019 to 2020, said. But he was not quite ready to move on from his aspirations and goals with the Red Bulls. “It wasn’t the right moment to leave now,” Struber said. “I am comfortable in my current role as a head coach and believe that this is how I have the biggest impact and want to continue that path.”

Struber’s contract at RBNY runs until 2023. The Austrian was also a candidate at Werder Bremen; the Bundesliga club wanted to sign him to replace Markus Anfang. “There have been several interesting offers over the last few weeks,” Struber said. “But I have a long-term contract in New York, which I want to honor because I have an ambitious team with whom I want to make the next step.”

Rangnick has been in charge at Manchester United since last week and will be in an interim role until the summer of 2022. The 63-year-old will then continue at the Red Devils in a consultancy role for two additional years. He has also stated that he would be interested in remaining the manager long-term.
