No new goalkeeper needed

Reports out of Mexico suggest that Bayer Leverkusen will sign goalkeeper Carlos Acevedo. Fox Sports was the first to report about Leverkusen’s interest in the Santos Laguna goalkeeper. Local outlet Multimedios Laguna then not only confirmed the story but reported that a deal was now in place. Those reports have, however, been shut down by Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes on Sunday.
“The rumors about us signing Acevedo are nonsense,” Rolfes said to Bild on Sunday. “They are simply not true.” Acevedo has seen his stock rise dramatically at the Guerreros. The starter since 2020/21, Acevedo was recently nominated for the Mexican national team for the friendly against Chile on Dec. 8. The academy product has played 89 games for Santos Laguna.

Bayer Leverkusen already have four goalkeepers under contract. Lukas Hradecky and his number two, Andrey Lunev, are under contract until 2023. Third keeper Niklas Lomb will see his contract expire at the end of the season. Former U21 national team goalkeeper Lennart Grill is expected to return from SK Brann in the winter and is under contract until 2024. Acevedo would have been the fifth goalkeeper under contract.
