Long-term contract
As expected, Eddie Howe will take over the vacant manager position at Premier League side Newcastle United. The Magpies reported on Monday that the 43-year-old has signed a contract until 2024.
“We have been incredibly impressed by Eddie through what has been a rigorous recruitment process,” Newcastle co-owner Amanda Staveley said in a club statement. “As well as his obvious achievements with AFC Bournemouth, where he had a transformational impact, he is a passionate and dynamic coach who has clear ideas about taking this team and club forward.”

Howe previously was in charge of Bournemouth, where he worked for 11 years. Between 2012 and 2020, Howe first guided the club to the Premier League and then kept the Cherries there for five seasons. Some of his former players are now at Newcastle. Callum Wilson, Ryan Fraser, and Matt Ritchie played for Howe at Bournemouth. Howe also worked at Burnley from January 2011 to October 2012.

Another candidate was the Spaniard Unai Emery but he decided to remain at Villarreal. A Saudi consortium recently purchased 80% of the club’s shares, and the club has been without a manager for three weeks. The new owners want to turn the Magpies into a Premier League top club, similar to Manchester City’s after the takeover in 2008. But at the moment, the club is threatened by relegation and has collected just five points from the first 11 games (Premier League standings).
We are delighted to confirm the appointment of Eddie Howe as the club’s new head coach.
Welcome to Newcastle United, Eddie!
