Update in the Netherlands
Transfermarkt has updated the market values in the Eredivisie. One change stands out in particular: the drastic fall of Ajax’s André Onana. The 25-year-old goalkeeper drops from €30 to now €17 million, a loss of 43.3 %. In the history of TM market values, no player in the Dutch top tier experienced such a minus – a €13 million drop is a new record.
Midfielder Donny van de Beek, once under contract at Ajax like Onana and active at Manchester United for a year, lost €11 million euros of his €55 million market value in the spring of 2020. Onana’s significant devaluation is the result of a long doping ban, problems in contract talks with his employers and the lack of interest from top clubs. The only thing that is clear about Onana’s future is that nothing is clear yet. Nevertheless, even after his fall from €45 million, the Cameroonian remains the most valuable keeper in the league.

Closing in on Onana is Feyenoord goalkeeper Justin Bijlow. The 23-year-old has climbed from €8 million to €12 million and is now second in the goalkeeper rankings. Bijlow is rewarded above all for his first three appearances for the Dutch national team under Louis van Gaal. If he remains stable in his performances and even improves, the chances of a further plus are good.
Like Bijlow, his teammate Tyrell Malacia has also earned a regular spot in the Elftal. The left-back is now an integral part of Feyenoord’s starting eleven, and his good development is being taken into account with an increase of €1.5 to now €9 million. Alkmaar’s Owen Wijndal is still ahead in terms of value. “But the two are getting closer to each other. Wijndal, like AZ, has had a poor start to the new season and has also lost his place in the starting lineup of the Dutch national team. As a result, his value has dropped a bit,” Voetbalimpact, market value coordinator in the Eredivisie, explains. Specifically, it is a loss of €2.5 million to now €15 million.
Ajax represented heavily – The most valuable Eredivisie players
Meanwhile, it not only goes up for Malacia, but also for other youngsters such as Noni Madueke, Cody Gakpo, Devyne Rensch and Jurriën Timber. The latter three have been able to increase their value through their experience with the national team. “Gakpo is currently PSV’s best player. He continues his good development and shows that he is a potential top player,” Voetbalimpact says. Attacking player Gakpo’s upgrade from €18 million to €22 million moves him up to the top 5 of the most valuable Eredivisie players.
Market values Eredivisie: Timber on the up – minus for Tagliafico & Neres
The market value coordinator also has positive things to say about Timber, who is climbing from €11 million to €17 million: “Timber continues to develop well and is now a regular with the Dutch national team. He is also an integral part of Ajax’s defence, which is currently the most solid in Europe. As a result, Timber can now call himself the second most valuable centre-back in the Eredivisie.”
Transfermarkt also made some downgrades as part of the market value update. “We have seen that players from the Dutch lower or middle class are sold for less money than we originally thought,” Voetbalimpact explains. “Therefore, we have adjusted the values of players like Joey Veerman (Heerenveen; -1.5 to €7 million) and Fredrik Midtsjö (Alkmaar; -2 to €8 million) slightly downwards.”
Also having to make do with a downgrade are seasoned players such as Ajax’s Nicolás Tagliafico (from €22 million to €18 million) and David Neres (from €27 million to €22 million), who have lost their status as regulars. For striker Neres, this is the fourth downgrade since January 2020 – when he was still valued at €45 million.
Ajax midfielder Ryan Gravenberch remains the most valuable player in the Eredivisie and maintains his market value of €33 million, but increases the lead over the number two in the ranking. After Onana’s fall, former West Ham striker Sébastien Haller holds this spot with an unchanged value of €27 million.
