Insolvency & point reduction

Despite being docked 12 points for the club’s insolvency, manager Wayne Rooney wants to continue his role at Derby County. “I will fight for the club,” Rooney said to the BBC. “I wouldn’t leave the staff in the lurch. They need someone to lead them.”

Derby have collected eight points from the first ten games but, because of the point reduction, now drop to the bottom of the Championship. The club had to declare insolvency due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and three administrators were brought in to manage the club. English clubs are punished with a 12 point reduction if they have to declare insolvency. The club management has since announced that they will continue to play.

The 1972 and 1975 league champion is also in danger of further point reduction. The EFL is currently investigating the club over the potential violation of a transfer embargo that was issued against the club last summer. Asked whether he would have taken the job if he had known about the financial problems, Rooney said: “I doubt it.” Rooney took over in November 2020 after Phillip Cocu left the club.
