Atlético sign Matheus Cunha from Hertha BSC – Record sale for German club

Former Everton target

Hertha BSC are losing their best attacking player Matheus Cunha to Atlético after a poor start to the Bundesliga season. Both clubs confirmed the expected transfer on Tuesday. The 22-year-old Brazilian signed a contract with the Colchoneros running until June 30, 2026.

The transfer fee reportedly amounts to €30 million, and further bonus payments may be added. This sum fulfilled the demands of Hertha CEO Fredi Bobic, who had announced that he would not sell Cunha for “below the current market value”. The forward thus becomes the most expensive departure in the history of the Berlin club.

Cunha had moved to the German capital for €18 million from RB Leipzig in January 2020. According to a Sportbuzzer report, the Red Bulls will benefit from the transfer to Atlético due to a sell-on clause. RB are set to receive “a smaller amount in the millions”. Among other clubs, the striker has also been linked with moves to Everton and Leeds in the past.
