Loan with option

“He wants to return to Italy,” agent Pablo Bentancur said in June when asked about the future of his client Lucas Torreira. “Arsenal understand the situation and will help us.” Two months later the transfer back to Serie A is done. The 25-year-old joins Fiorentina. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Fiorentina will pay a €1.5 million loan fee and then have an option to make the transfer permanent for €15 million.

In 2014, the then 17-year-old Torreira moved from Uruguay to Delfino Pescara where he broke into the first team. The central midfielder had his best time at Sampdoria, where he played 74 games in two years before joining Arsenal for €28.65 million in the summer of 2018—to this day the midfielder is Sampdoria’s third most expensive departure.

The 31-times national team player had a strong start and until the end of 2018 increased his market value to €55 million. But after several injuries, Torreira lost his starting position under manager Mikel Arteta and also struggled on loan at Atlético Madrid (722 minutes played).
