Chelsea return: Romelu Lukaku surpasses Neymar as most expensive player in history

Cumulative transfer fees

The second €100 million transfer of the summer is completed. Star striker Romelu Lukaku is leaving Italian champions Inter Milan to join Champions League winners Chelsea. According to media reports, €115 million will be due for the 28-year-old Belgian – only Jack Grealish, who had joined Manchester City for €117.5 million, was even more expensive in the current transfer window.

With the newly added transfer fee, Lukaku replaces Neymar as the player who has switched clubs for the highest cumulative transfer fees in football history. The Brazilian generated €310.2 million. With now €327.56 million, Lukaku moves up from third to first place and – besides Neymar – also surpasses Cristiano Ronaldo (€230 million).

The forward set two further records. In addition to the most expensive sale of a Serie A club – this place belonged to Paul Pogba, who had moved from Juventus to Manchester United for €105 million five years ago – Lukaku is also the new record signing at Chelsea. This position was previously held by Kai Havertz and goalkeeper Kepa with €80 million each. Furthermore, Lukaku joins a group of now twelve players who have cost at least €100 million.

Record signing: Lukaku’s return to Chelsea brings him full circle

For the Belgian, who has reportedly reached an agreement with the Londoners for a net annual salary of €12 million, earning €4.5 million more than at the Nerazzurri, his return completes a circle. On August 8, 2011, almost exactly ten years ago, Lukaku made his first move to Stamford Bridge as an 18-year-old from youth club RSC Anderlecht. He was unable to live up to the high expectations at the time and eventually left the club for Everton in 2014 after just 15 senior appearances without scoring and two loan spells.

For Inter, the 98-time international played 95 matches, in which he scored 64 times and also provided 16 assists. Before Lukaku, the financially troubled Italians had already lost head coach Antonio Conte, who left the club, and Achraf Hakimi (to PSG).

“For Inter, this is a big blow because the coach (Simone Inzaghi), the management, and especially the fans had actually assumed that they would start the season with the current team. But in the current financial situation in which football and especially the club’s owners find themselves, such an offer could hardly be turned down,” Jatin Dietl, Transfermarkt Area Manager Italy, explains. Nevertheless, the “mood of the fans towards the Chinese owner has reached rock bottom.”
