Cristian Romero is one of the ten most expensive centre-backs in football history. The Argentine announced his transfer earlier on Friday. Tottenham Hotspur have since confirmed the deal.

According to information acquired by Sky Sports, the fee is set between €50 million and €55 million. Fabrizio Romano reported that the fee will be €55 million. Enough for Romero to become the tenth centre-back to cost €50 million or more. Last season, he was named Serie A’s best defender by the league.

“I just wanted to join Spurs because I really like the project,” he said. Paratici (sporting director) and the whole club wanted me and I will give my best,” the defender said on Friday morning. Paratici has signed the player before. In 2019 when he was in charge at Juventus Paratici signed him for €26 million from Genoa. He then left first on loan for €2.32 million and then later thanks to an option to buy (€16m) to Atalanta.

Romero to Spurs: Demiral to join Atalanta from Juventus

The gap in Atalanta’s defensive centre will be filled by Juventus player Merih Demiral, who already passed his medical at the Champions League contenders on Thursday, as Sky journalist Gianluca di Marzio reports.

According to the report, both clubs agreed on a loan with a subsequent option to buy set at €30 million. This amount would make Demiral the most expensive signing in Atalanta’s history and the second most expensive Turkish footballer.
