Grealish undergoing Man City medical – Aston Villa accept record fee

Most expensive Englishman in history

The record transfer of Aston Villa‘s attacking midfielder Jack Grealish to Manchester City is almost done. After reports surfaced last week that the Citizens were close to signing the midfielder for around €100 million, media reports now suggest that a deal for the 25-year-old is all but done. Dominic King from the Daily Mail tweeted that Grealish is expected to complete his medical in Manchester on Thursday. Sky Sport and The Telegraph also reported that a deal was complete.

On Wednesday, Grealish completed his last training session with his teammates at Villa. The Villa signed Leon Bailey from Bayer Leverkusen this week. The Birmingham-based club has already signed Emiliano Buendía. But because of the Grealish transfer, Villa will make a profit on the transfer market this summer.

The Athletic reported that Aston Villa will receive £100 million (€117.5m) for the left-winger—more than any other transfer since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Grealish will break several other records as well. He will become the most expensive English player in history and the most expensive Premier League signing. Worldwide, Grealish will become the seventh most expensive transfer in history and the 11th player to be transferred for more than €100 million.

Jack Grealish breaks Kevin De Bruyne’s record transfer at City

For City, it is the first €100 million-plus transfer in club history. The current transfer record is held by Kevin de Bruyne. The now 30-year-old cost €76 million in 2015.

Grealish was born and raised in Birmingham and has played for Aston Villa since 2001, where he signed a professional contract in 2013. The attacking midfielder scored 32 goals and 43 assists in 213 games for The Lions. Last season the 12-times national team player became one of the best players in the Premier League.
