Deal out of nowhere
Danny Ings has joined Aston Villa. The Villa made the transfer of the Southampton striker official on Wednesday. The deal came out of nowhere and was completed on the eve of Villa losing Jack Grealish to Manchester City. The Athletic writer Gregg Evans reported that Southampton will receive £30 million for the forward with 20% of the fee going to his former club Liverpool.
“Danny is an outstanding Premier League footballer who has scored goals wherever he has played,” head coach Dean Smith said in a club statement. “He is also a top professional with a great character who will be a leader in our squad and a role model for our rapidly developing young Academy players who are now in and around the first team. I am delighted to welcome Danny to our great Club.”
The England national team striker scored 14 goals last term for both club and country. Ings becomes the club’s fourth signing after Leon Bailey, Emiliano Buendía, and Ashley Young at Villa Park. The 29-year-old has signed a three-year contract at the Birmingham-based club (to all summer signings).
