After second championship
Spanish champion Atlético de Madrid and Diego Simeone will continue to work together. The Argentine has extended his contract, which was set to expire in 2022, by two more years until June 30, 2024. The Colchoneros announced the agreement on Thursday evening.
Simeone has been with Atlético since January 2012—no club among the 25 most valuable in the world can even remotely claim such a long coaching tenure. The Argentine’s points average is also outstanding when measured against the length of his time in charge: In 527 competitive games, Simeone has averaged 2.03 points with the Madrilenians.
Chelsea, PSG & Co. – The most valuable squads in the world
In 2014 and 2021, Simeone won the Spanish championship with Atlético. He also won the Copa del Rey in 2013, the Spanish Supercup in 2015, the Europa League in 2012 and 2018, and the UEFA Supercup in 2013 and 2019. The 2016/17 and 2019/20 seasons are the only ones in which he did not win a title with the club. He also led his team to the Champions League final in 2014 and 2016, both of which saw defeats to arch-rivals Real Madrid (1:4 AET; 4:6 on pens).
