Winger heads home
Ajax have signed Tottenham Hotspur winger Steven Bergwijn on a five-year deal for a confirmed transfer fee of £26.48 million (€31.25 million). Not only does the fee constitute a record transfer fee spent by the Dutch giants but it is also the largest fee ever paid by a club from the Eredivisie for a player.
Bergwijn began his career in Ajax’s youth teams, before moving on to league rivals PSV in 2011 and earning promotion to the first team in 2015. After five years in the senior side, the winger then earned a move to Tottenham for £27m but never really managed to make his mark in English football. As such, Spurs’ ability to recoup the money they paid for the 24-year-old talent has surprised many, but Ajax seemed more than happy to pay up for the young talent. “It is indicative of Steven’s ambition that he chose to make the step to Ajax,” said Ajax manager Alfred Schreuder, who replaced Erik ten Hag this summer. “He is a player with many qualities. He has enormous drive and is also very goal-oriented. Of course, I am happy that we were able to sign him, he adds new quality to our team.”

Four in, two out – Conte’s Tottenham rebuild rumbles on
Bergwijn is Tottenham’s second sale of the summer, following the sale of Cameron Carter-Vickers to Celtic for £6.3m, which takes the club’s income from summer transfer sales up to just short of £35m. But reports in England have suggested that more players could be shown the exit door in the coming weeks, with Emerson Royal, Bryan Gil and Harry Winks all heavily linked with moves to other clubs. Such an exodus is undoubtedly part of Tottenham’s major rebuild under manager Antonio Conte, who has now overseen no less than six first team players since he joined the club in November of 2021. In this summer’s transfer window alone, the North London club have spent around £78m on players such as Richarlison, Yves Bissouma, Ivan Perisic and Fraser Forster, with more still expected to join before the start of the new season.
