Tottenham sign Cristian Romero on permanent deal – Third largest transfer fee in club history

Winks heads to Serie A 

Tottenham Hotspur have completed the permanent signing of central defender Cristian Romero from Atalanta, as part of the initial loan deal that brought the Argentina international to the Premier League in August 2021. According to reports in England, the defender’s fee stands at €50 million, making Romero the club’s third highest signing ever. The defender will sign a contract with Spurs that will run until the summer of 2027. 

The permanent signing of the 24-year-old talent now means that Spurs have taken their summer spending to just under €170m, following the arrival of Richarlison, Yves Bissouma, Destiny Udogie, Djed Spence, as well as free transfers Ivan Perisic and Fraser Forster. However, the club have also recouped just under €39m in the sales of Steven Bergwijn and Cameron Carter-Vickers, as well as Tanguy Ndombélé and Harry Winks moving on loan. 

The recent business now means that Spurs’ transfer spending for the summer window places them third among all other clubs in terms of total expenditures on new signings, behind only Barcelona and West Ham. However, when it comes to net spend, the North London club drop down to sixth, behind the aforementioned London rivals as well as Nottingham Forest, Chelsea, Newcastle United and Manchester United.

Despite some injury problems that ruled the defender out for 14 Premier League games last season, Romero has been a first team starter at Spurs since he made the move over 12 months ago. As part of Antonio Conte’s back three, the Argentine talent has gone from strength to strength, as showcased through his market value increasing on two occasions from €35m upon his arrival at Spurs up to where it now stands at €48m. 

Tottenham transfers: Winks departs for loan move to Sampdoria

However, Romero wasn’t the only Spurs player to complete a transfer on Tuesday. As per an announcement from Serie A, midfielder Winks’ proposed loan move to Sampdoria was also completed, allowing the English talent to make the move to Italy for a season-long deal, with no further options to make the move permanent.

Despite coming through Tottenham’s youth ranks as a talented defensive midfielder, Winks has struggled for game time at the London club. Last season the 26-year-old talent managed only 905 minutes of Premier League football and will undoubtedly be making the move to the Italian top-flight with high hopes of picking up some much-needed game time and experience.
