Tottenham Hotspur news: Heung-Min Son finally gets the credit he deserves as a Premier League star

After a frustrating campaign that had a number of highs and lows, Tottenham Hotspur managed to finish the season with a smile on their faces when they clinched a top four finish in the Premier League, thanks to a convincing 5-0 win over Norwich. Not only does it now confirm Champions League football for next season, but did so at the direct expense of rivals Arsenal. 

However, while the back pages of the London newspapers may have been dominated by photos of Harry Kane and Antonio Conte, the real hero for Spurs this season was none other than star forward Heung-Min Son. And alongside the collective achievement of bagging a top four finish, the South Korea international was personally awarded for his own performances by claiming the Golden Boot award. 

Not only will that award mean a huge amount to Son, who managed to beat Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah as well as a long list of remarkable strikers in the Premier League to the award, but it will also prove to be just another reminder of how remarkably consistent the Spurs star has been in the English top flight since he made the move from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015.

Goals and assists aplenty – How Son developed into a Spurs star

Although Son did have a slow start to like in English football, with just four goals and one assist in his first season at the club, he quickly found his stride in the 16/17 season with 14 goals and eight assists in just 34 games for the club. This notable eye for goal remained consistent over the next two seasons, as the South Korea international bagged 24 goals, as well as 15 league assists. 

Interestingly, Son then began to develop into more of a playmaker for Spurs in 2019/20, when he provided 11 assists in 37 league games – a tally which matched exactly with his goal return. With no less than five of those 11 assists leading directly to a goal for Kane. In the following season, Kane then returned the favour and created more assists for Son than any other striker partnership in the top flight, as Son bagged a career best of 17 goals and 10 assists in the league. 

However, it was in this season’s league campaign that we saw the 29-year-old forward really flex his poaching skills, as he once again opted to play in front of Kane and allow the England international to set him up for goals. In turn, Kane provided five assists for Son, along with a further five from on-loan signing Dejan Kulusevski. As a result, Son bagged 23 league goals in 35 games – a feat that no other player in the league was able to improve upon. 

Whether it be as a playmaker or a stone-cold killer in the box to finish off moves, Son has developed into one of the most consistent and malleable forwards in the modern English games. Which is exactly why he’s now valued at €80 million in today’s market and has just been confirmed as the best forward in the Premier League this season.
