Tony Adams suggested that Arsenal could have won the Premier League with Unai Emery as manager.

Mikel Arteta came close to delivering a first league title since 2004 for the club, before suffering a late-season collapse.

The Gunners sat top of the table for 248 days, only to have to sit and watch rivals Man City lift the trophy in May on their way to a historic treble.

Arsenal legend Adams hinted that Arteta’s inexperience told during that end of season run of dropped points.

When asked about Arteta, he told talkSPORT: “I love him. I love his passion and enthusiasm. I’ve always said he’s a little bit inexperienced and perhaps needs to draw on someone in his staff who is a little more experienced.

“I’m talking about going across the line last season.

“We all make mistakes and aren’t perfect. He perhaps didn’t rotate players early enough last season. People were running out of steam, like Bukayo Saka. I think he’s doing great.

“Last year, weirdly if Unai Emery was our manager then we could have perhaps won the league.

“I know he didn’t stick around and following Arsene Wenger was difficult, a bit like George Graham being followed by Bruce Rioch.

“I think he missed a few bits last season to get us over the line.”

Arsenal are again hoping to mount a new title charge this season and went back top of the table with a 1-0 win over Brentford.

But Adams says his old club will not win the Premier League without signing a ruthless goalscorer.

Eddie Nketiah is their top Premier League scorer this season with five goals – with three of those coming in the same game.

Bukayo Saka is next on four, while Martin Odegaard and Leandro Trossard have three each.

They are well short of the league’s current top scorers Erling Haaland and Mo Salah, who have 14 and 10 respectively.

When asked if Arsenal can win the league without a serial goalscorer, Adams told talkSPORT: “No.”

He added: “I’m not so sure you can win it with Eddie, I think he’s great, I think he’s a good kid, but I think you need more.

“You just see it by evidence, teams that are winning the league having people like Haaland and Mo Salah back – these people are on fire, absolutely on fire.

Saka’s been brilliant for us and Martinelli’s been brilliant for us. They’ve been carrying the team really for the last two, three, four, five years really, since they broke in.

“I’ve always thought that they might have a little bit of a rest up because they’ve been absolutely top of their game.

Saka in particular for his country as well, amazing player, unbelievable.”

When posed whether the Gunners should sign Ivan Toney, he said: “If he’s better than the one that you’ve got, bring him in, bring him in.”
