Complete Premiership update

Transfermarkt has now updated the market values in the Scottish Premiership and further underlined the impressive European campaign that Rangers enjoyed in last season’s Europa League. Despite losing the league titles to rivals Celtic, the Ibrox club can lay claim to no less than eight of the 10 most valuable players in the Scottish Premiership.

Indeed, the top tier of talent in the Scottish top-flight is evenly made up of established, senior stars, such as Colombian striker Alfredo Morelos and Callum McGregor, who have a market value of €13 million and €8m respectively, as well as young stars making a name for themselves, like Calvin Bassey (€9m increase) and Jota (€2m increase). Following a season which saw the 25-year-old forward bag three goals and 20 assists – with no less than six in total from 13 Europa League games – it comes as no surprise that Ryan Kent has been confirmed as the most valuable player in the division, with a market value of €17.5m. Which is a 25% increase of €3.5m since our last update for the league.

Scottish Premiership market values: Celtic see big gains – Ramsay justifies Liverpool move

Although Rangers dominate the top 10 for top market values, Celtic’s impressive progress under new manager Ange Postecoglou over the past 12 months is clear to see from the remarkable strides the club’s new and previously unknown signings have made since then. When we gauge which players have made the biggest market value increases since the start of last season, Celtic players make up no less than six of the top 10. Despite Bassey remaining top with a €9.6m increase in the past 12 months, Celtic stars Liel Abada (€4.5m increase), Josip Juranovic (€4.5m), Jota (€4m), Kyogo Furuhashi (€4m), Carl Starfelt (€3m) and Daizen Maeda (€2.4m) have all gone from strength to strength in the 2021/22 campaign.

However, perhaps the most eye-catching change in a player’s market value over the course of the previous season came from none other than former Aberdeen defender and recent Liverpool signing Calvin Ramsay, who saw his market value shoot up by an incredible 2400% to €5m, following a remarkable break-through campaign at Pittodrie. As such, the player’s new market value coincides with the fee paid for his services by the Premier League giants.

How Transfermarkt market values work

The Transfermarkt market values are calculated, taking into account various pricing models. A major factor is the Transfermarkt community, whose members discuss and evaluate player market values in detail. In general, the Transfermarkt market values are not to be equated with transfer fees.

The goal is not to predict a price but an expected value of a player in a free market. Both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant in determining market values. Examples of this are listed below. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (you can find the detailed market value definition here).
