Would surpass Joelinton
Newcastle have spent €66 million on Sven Botman, Matt Targett and Nick Pope in the transfer market so far – two defenders and a goalkeeper. Head coach Eddie Howe has also identified a need for improvements in attacking positions. According to media reports, the Magpies want Leicester’s James Maddison.
As reported by The Athletic, Sky Sports and the BBC, among others, the Foxes have rejected an initial offer of around £40 million (€47.5 million) from the Magpies for the prolific midfielder. Even if the 25-year-old switched clubs for the quoted amount, Maddison would replace Joelinton as the most expensive signing in Newcastle’s history. The Brazilian arrived for €44 million from German side Hoffenheim in 2019.

Newcastle are said to have not yet been deterred by the rejection and have made a second offer for the Leicester star. The bid is reportedly worth between the initial £40 million (€47.5 million) and £50 million (€59.7 million). Leicester apparently demand no less than £60 million (€71.5 million) for Maddison, who is still under contract until 2024. The most expensive sale in the Foxes’ history so far is Harry Maguire, who left for Manchester United for €87 million in 2019. A record, which could be in danger this summer, should Chelsea fulfil the club’s demands for fellow centre-back Wesley Fofana.
Most expensive English players in history: Maddison soon in top 5?
Should he complete a transfer to Newcastle, Maddison would rank among the five most expensive English players in history. The Coventry-born midfielder had joined Leicester for €25 million from Norwich in 2018. Since then, he has scored 45 goals (32 assists) in 170 games across all competitions and had his best season last year with 20 goal involvements in 35 Premier League appearances.
