Musiala dazzles RB Leipzig with fantastic first-half display – Bayern win German Supercup 5-3

Dominant Rekordmeister 

Bayern Munich have won their tenth DFL Supercup. On Saturday, the Rekordmeister beat RB Leipzig 3-5 in front of 47,000 spectators at the sold-out Red Bull Arena in Leipzig. Bayern were dominant in every aspect during the first half, and the match seemed to be over after 45 minutes as an unplayable Jamal Musiala dismantled the Red Bulls. Leipzig then rallied back and would make it 3-4, but fell short of a spectacular comeback following a later fifth goal for the Munich giants.

The game was only 14 minutes old when Musiala opened the scoring for Bayern Munich with a clinical finish from inside the box. Then 20 minutes later new signing Sadio Mané doubled the scoring after a wonderful assist by Serge Gnabry. But despite Mané’s first goal, the evening belonged to the Bayern youngster. Just before halftime, Musiala once again showed his magic when he picked out Benjamin Pavard with a brilliant pass inside the box; the Frenchman simply had to tap it home to make it 3-0. 

Musiala’s night was over after 60 minutes — just moments after Marcel Halstenberg made it 1-3 — as he was replaced by Kingsley Coman. Without the teenager, Bayern would have almost gave away the victory. Gnabry would score in the 66th minute, and then in the 76th minute, Christopher Nkunku would make it 2-4 from the spot. Then in the 89th minute, Dani Olmo beat Manuel Neuer with a clinical finish to make it 3-4. It was too little too late, though, for Leipzig, as Bayern’s Leroy Sané would put the game away in the extra time, making it 3-5 on a breakaway. 

Musiala show against RB Leipzig – Teenager ready for the next step?

It was a spectacular game in which Musiala’s performance was on everyone’s mind. The teenager impressed at a time in which there has been a significant debate on how the Rekordmeister will make up for the 50 goals they lost when the club sold Robert Lewandowski to Barcelona two weeks ago. The club has since decided that they will replace the goals by distributing the scoring responsibility on many shoulders, and Musiala’s performance highlights that he could become an important contributor. 

It would certainly add to Musiala’s growing reputation if he becomes a consistent goalscoring thread. The 15-times German national team player has grown his market value to €65 million since first making his debut for Bayern two years ago, which makes him the fourth most valuable teenager on the planet (overview). But adding consistent goalscoring to his game will very much guarantee that his market value will grow further and will be a welcome sight at a club looking for additional goals.
