Arsenal are about to set the goalkeeper carousel in motion. On Thursday, well-informed ESPN commentator Taylor Twellman reported that the Gunners have made a strong bid to sign New England Revolution goalkeeper Matt Turner. Turner was voted the Major League Soccer goalkeeper of the season in 2021 and also was a big part of the US men’s national team that won the Gold Cup last summer. The transfer also has an immediate impact on Arsenal’s outgoing transfer business as Transfermarkt understands that Bernd Leno has an offer from Newcastle United.

Leno, in fact, has been willing to listen to offers ever since he lost the starting role to English keeper Aaron Ramsdale at the start of the season. The 29-year-old German keeper has made just seven appearances for Arsenal across all competitions this season (two clean sheets) but needs to play in order to have a fighting chance to make the German national team for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Currently, Kevin Trapp (Eintracht Frankfurt) and Stefan Ortega (Arminia Bielefeld) are ahead when it comes to the number three spot behind Manuel Neuer (Bayern Munich) and Marc-André ter Stegen (Barcelona).

Nothing is final yet but Newcastle could indeed provide Leno with playing time ahead of the World Cup. The Magpies were taken over by a Saudi consortium in the fall and have the finances to secure Leno.

Matt Turner to Arsenal – Leno’s path clear to leave the club?

Newcastle are in dire need of a strong goalkeeper in their fight to stay in the Premier League. The Magpies are second to bottom one point ahead of Burnley, who have three games in hand. Arsenal signing Turner would, therefore, provide Leno the opportunity to head to another club and give Arsenal the chance to tap into the lucrative US market.
