Mathys Tel set to join Bayern Munich from Stade Rennais – Soon most expensive U17 player

Deal Imminent 

Bayern Munich have reached an agreement with Stade Rennais to sign talented forward Mathys Tel. Transfermarkt can confirm initial reports from Sky Germany and Sport1 that all parties have found an agreement on Saturday. Bayern will pay €20 million and €8 million in performance-based add-ons. The 17-year-old striker will sign a contract until 2027. 

Once all bonus payments are reached, Tel will become the most expensive U17 player on the planet. The current record is held by Jude Bellingham; the midfielder joined Borussia Dortmund from Birmingham City in 2020 for €25 million. Without bonus payments, Tel will rank fifth together with Willem Geubels from Monaco (full overview). Tell will also be the most expensive teenager signed in this summer transfer window.

It is a significant fee for a payer who has featured in just seven professional games for Stade Rennais, but sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic believes that the forward will significantly increase his market value over the next few years and wanted to sign the player why he was still affordable.

Tel is considered one of the most talented forwards on the market. “Thierry Henry is Tel’s idol, and looking at the highlights from the U17 Euros, you can see the similarities, especially in his ability to break free from defenders, finding space behind the backline,” TM Area Manager France Ronan Caroff said in an interview with Gegenpressing. Caroff also compared the player to Lewandowski. “Of course, predicting what will happen to a prospect is always hard. But I would not be surprised if he becomes part of the rotation at some point this upcoming season.”
