Transfermarkt.pt has updated the market values of the Liga Portugal and revalued a total of 71 players. The new most valuable player in the league is centre-forward Darwin Núñez of Benfica. The 22-year-old increased his market value by €8 million – from €32 million to now €40 million.

Things are running well for the eight-time Uruguay international in the current season: 22 goal contributions in 21 matches speak for themselves, and the right-footed striker was also convincing in the Champions League – most recently against Ajax. “When he gets going, he is a fast, physically strong striker who is difficult to defend,” Portugal expert Marcel de Almeida of Transfermarkt.pt says about Núñez. “He currently still has one or two technical flaws, but at 22 years old he is a striker coveted by many top clubs.” At the end of the winter transfer window, Benfica reportedly rejected a €40 million offer for Núñez.

Another winner of Transfermarkt.pt’s interim update is Porto attacker Evanilson. The 22-year-old increased his market value by €11 million to now €20 million. The Brazilian has scored eight times in the past eight league games and, together with Iranian Mehdi Taremi (up from €15 million to €17 million), forms one of the league’s most prolific attacks at the 29-time titleholders.

“Signed from Tombense in the summer of 2020 for just under €9 million, the investment has already paid off for Porto. If he continues to develop this well, he will earn the Dragons a good transfer fee in the coming years,” de Almeida sums up. The biggest percentage increase in market value was recorded by Braga forward Vitinha. The 21-year-old, who scored eight goals in 16 matches this season, has tripled his market value from €2 million to €6 million.

Liga Portugal market values: Gonçalves, Grujic & Co. among losers

Meanwhile, last year’s top scorer, Pedro Gonçalves of Sporting, lost a total of €3 million in value (€38 million to €35 million) and thus also his status as the league’s most valuable player. The 23-year-old has been unable to match the performances and his goal rate from the previous season so far and has repeatedly struggled with injuries. “When he is fit, however, he is still one of the best and smartest players in the league. It remains to be seen whether he finds his old form again in the final stages of the season and then takes the next step to a top club in the summer,” de Almeida says about the right winger, whose exit clause amounts to €80 million – his contract still runs until 2026.

There was also a downgrade for Marko Grujic. The 26-year-old loanee from Liverpool has mostly been used as a substitute at Porto so far, with his market value dropping by €1 million to €12 million. Grujic will be signed permanently for a fee of €9 million when the loan deal expires next summer. Former Frankfurt striker Haris Seferovic (down from €14 million to €10 million) and the two Benfica veterans and former Premier League defenders Jan Vertonghen (down from €4 million to €3 million) and Nicolás Otamendi (down from €6 million to €4.5 million) also recorded losses.

How Transfermarkt market values work

The Transfermarkt market values are calculated, taking into account various pricing models. A major factor is the Transfermarkt community, whose members discuss and evaluate player market values in detail. In general, the Transfermarkt market values are not to be equated with transfer fees.

The goal is not to predict a price but an expected value of a player in a free market. Both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant in determining market values. Examples of this are listed below. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (you can find the detailed market value definition here).
