Intermediary update

Transfermarkt.es has updated the LaLiga market values in an intermediary update. The biggest winners are FC Barcelona, the team of the moment: under head coach Xavi, the Catalans last lost in the league at the beginning of December, won El Clásico on Sunday night and are among the clubs with the strongest form in Europe – the squad value increases by €28 million to €679 million.

Pino & Co. - All new LaLiga market values at a glance

Youngster Gavi, who earned himself the biggest upgrade, jumping from €40 million to €60 million, is regularly part of the starting line-up. The 17-year-old midfielder only received his first market value at the start of the season after being promoted to the first team by former head coach Ronald Koeman. In the market value ranking of youngsters born in 2004, he increased his lead over second-placed Youssoufa Moukoko (Borussia Dortmund) to €45 million.

“At 17 years old, Gavi brings an impressive overall package: Versatility, technical ability, intensity, courage and mental strength. A contract extension at Barcelona would be a milestone for the club in their search for the old stability. Gavi embodies Barça’s DNA in his whole demeanour. He has all the assets to play a major role at the club as well as the national team and has made another jump in terms of market value thanks to his goal contributions,” Tobias Blaseio, Area Manager Transfermarkt.es, explains.

Market values LaLiga: Many devaluations at Real Madrid for Hazard, Bale & Co.

On the other hand, many market values at the losers of El Clásico decrease: Real Madrid lose the most of all LaLiga clubs with €23.5 million – the lead in terms of squad value and LaLiga points nevertheless remains big. Responsible for this are mainly players whose market value curve already showed a downward trend in the past updates.

Daniel Carvajal (-€2 million to €18 million), Luka Jovic (-€2 million to €18 million), Eden Hazard (-€2 million to €16 million), Gareth Bale (-€2 million to €3 million) and Isco (-€1.5 million to €7.5 million) all register minor devaluations, which are necessary due to mediocre performances and regularly sitting on the bench or in the stands. In particular in the case of Hazard, who has only featured in six matches this calendar year, good form gave way to pale performances again shortly before Christmas. Since his move to Real in 2019, there has been no other footballer in the world with such a large drop in market value as for the Belgian.

The biggest devaluation in the team of Carlo Ancelotti and at the same time of the whole league goes to the account of a 30-year-old regular starter: Casemiro. “The Brazilian enters the autumn of his career. Despite being downgraded again, he remains in a top spot when you consider position and age group. The perennial player, who provides stability and success in Real’s midfield, sometimes seems to be overplayed and in need of more breaks. When it comes down to it, however, he is usually just as reliable as he is known to be and thus continues to be indispensable,” Blaseio says.

“A permanent replacement for him is not yet in sight, Real Madrid should look to give Casemiro appropriate time off in the future to benefit from his quality for many more years to come.” Despite the devaluation from €60 million to €50 million, the Brazilian remains in the top 3 among midfielders aged 30 or older – level with Chelsea’s N’Golo Kanté.

Villarreal’s Arnaut Danjuma, a player who exactly one year ago had a market value of €12 million, is also valued at €50 million. “The high-flyer at Villarreal shows why he is likely to become a transfer target for many English clubs in the summer. Liverpool and Manchester United are the names being mentioned in the press. With 17 goal contributions in 27 games and multiple strong performances in the Champions League, a further upgrade is therefore necessary. In the summer, we will see whether the Dutchman leaves the Champions League quarterfinalists for a huge transfer or if we can continue to see his abilities in LaLiga,” Blaseio explains.

While the Dutch left winger was bought for €23.5 million from Bournemouth in 2021, right winger Yéremy Pino already played for the youth teams of The Yellow Submarine at the age of 16. The 19-year-old Spain international makes another step forward and rises from €30 million to €40 million due to his strong performances – he extended his contract until 2027 in November. “The Canarian is a textbook street footballer. Technically a feast for the eyes and carefree in his play. A kind of diamond in the rough, Unai Emery has the best coaching qualities to support Pino on his way. More continuity over 90 minutes and stability in the performances would now be desirable,” Blaseio says.

Things are going completely differently and not according to plan at all for another 19-year-old youngster: Ilaix Moriba. RB Leipzig brought the midfielder for €16 million in 2021 following a messy departure from FC Barcelona and have since been waiting for the flashes of class that Moriba showed in the Barça shirt – they are also waiting for this at loan club Valencia.

“Ilaix had certainly envisioned his career development differently. After his messy departure from Barcelona, he now had the opportunity to silence his critics in Spain at Valencia. So far, however, the results have been so poor that a possible extension of his loan is likely to be rather uninteresting from the club’s point of view. Moriba must now find an environment in which he can steer his career in a more stable direction,” Blaseio explains.

How Transfermarkt market values work

The Transfermarkt market values are calculated, taking into account various pricing models. A major factor is the Transfermarkt community, whose members discuss and evaluate player market values in detail. In general, the Transfermarkt market values are not to be equated with transfer fees.

The goal is not to predict a price but an expected value of a player in a free market. Both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant in determining market values. Examples of this are listed below. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (you can find the detailed market value definition here).
