England star on the move?

Liverpool’s season seems to be falling apart across the board. Whether it be a dismal league campaign, shocking defeats in the Champions League or the weekly spectacle of Jürgen Klopp taking his frustration out on the English press, it certainly hasn’t been an easy period of time for fans of the Anfield club. However, hope is only ever just around the corner in football, and while Liverpool may be a mess on the pitch, fans may be growing confident of the club fixing its issues off it, with some smart signings in the coming summer transfer window.

The latest big player to be linked with a move to Anfield has been none other than Chelsea playmaker Mason Mount, who could be on his way out of Stamford Bridge in a matter of months. According to the Athletic, the England international has yet to agree to any new offers made by the London club and is now considering his options following the arrival of a number of new players to the club this season. The publication also reports that Liverpool may look to swoop in for the 24-year-old talent if the opportunity arises. And in many ways, Mount may be exactly what Liverpool need to fix many of their problems.

For starters, Liverpool are in desperate need of new faces in the middle of the park. Over the course of the last three seasons, Klopp and his backroom staff have only signed two central midfielders in the form of Thiago Alcantara and on-loan signing Arthur Melo. The former has only started in Klopp’s team in 43% of their games this season, while the latter hasn’t featured at all. And while youngsters like Stefan Bajcetic have made the step up from the youth team admirably, there’s no doubt that Liverpool’s ageing defence needs some back up.

Mason Mount assists

Mount, naturally, could provide some youthful exuberance overnight to a midfield trio that is often manned by senior players like James Milner (37 years old), Jordan Henderson (32) and Fabinho (29). And, perhaps even more importantly, the current Chelsea star could step into a role at Anfield that would see him become the club’s midfielder playmaker in quite some time.

Indeed, for much of Klopp’s time at the club, Liverpool’s assists have come from the wide areas. Whether in the form of excellent inside forwards like Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mané, false No.9s like Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino or indeed the club’s stalwart wing-backs Trend Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson, the Anfield club have often relegated their midfield to more industrious ball-winning players and left the finesse to the wide players. And that’s where Mount could change things.

Over the course of the last five seasons for Chelsea, Mount has established himself as an excellent Premier League playmaker and bagged no less than 43 assists in that time. And in that same period of time, no single Liverpool midfielder has managed to pick up as many Premier League assists as Mount has. Which perhaps goes some way to explaining why Klopp’s side have been so troubled on the pitch this season, without their wide players in peak fitness and form.
