Liverpool news: Liverpool incredible run in 2022 continues with win over Newcastle

Klopp’s team move into first 

Liverpool went top of the Premier League table on Saturday with a narrow 1-0 victory over Newcastle United. At a fully-packed St James Park, the hosts put on a good show and ran their Anfield rivals close for much of the game. However, a solitary goal from Naby Keita in the first half proved enough for all three points in the end for the visitors. 

The result now means that Jurgen Klopp and his side have gone top of the Premier League table, if only momentarily before Manchester City play their Saturday game. Pep Guardiola’s side are set to face Leeds United in the late match and will move back into first place with a win against Jesse Marsch’s side. 

With the second leg of their Champions League semi-final clash against Villarreal in the back of his mind, Klopp clearly opted for a more careful approach to Saturday’s clash by resting as many stars as he felt he could afford. Mohamed Salah, Thiago Alcantara and Fabinho all started on the bench, but were forced to make an appearance to ensure Liverpool picked up all three points. Trent Alexander-Arnold was also rested with a spot on the bench and didn’t feature at all.

Saturday’s win over Newcastle now means that the Anfield side have picked up no less than 12 victories from 14 Premier League games in 2022. Which is made all the more impressive by the fact that Klopp’s side have yet to taste defeat since the turn of the year. 

Indeed, if the Premier League table was decided by points won in 2022, Liverpool would be top with a nine-point lead, while Newcastle would be sitting in second place with 32 points. Man City, in comparison, have only won 30 points but have played two fewer games than their title rivals.
